Finca La Esmerelda is located in Pitalito, southern Huila, near the heart of the Macizo Colombiano at an altitude of 1,700 metres. Situated at the confluence of three major mountain ranges and close to the source of the Magdalena River, amidst a multitude of microclimates, this is classic, high-quality coffee country. In addition to the region’s natural attributes, estate owner Alexander Hernandez is also PECA certified, having completed the Caravela PECA curriculum.

We recommend grinding the beans before brewing as freshly ground coffee tends to have a better flavour and aroma. However, you can still opt to have your beans ground by us.

This coffee is roasted-to-order on Monday and Tuesday (excluding public holidays). If your order is submitted before 12pm on Friday, your order will be placed in the roasting schedule of the following week and dispatched in the same week. However, we do roast a small batch of 2 different single origin coffees for our subscription orders weekly. If this coffee is available, your order may be fulfilled within 2-5 working days. You'll receive an automated email with a tracking number when your order has been picked up by our delivery partner.

Alexander Hernandez

Caravela has been sourcing great quality coffee from Latin America's leading small-holder farmers for the past 2 decades. Pursuing only the highest quality and the best practices with the utmost transparency, they can count on a team of more than 200 coffee professionals and a web of fulfilling, multi-dimensional relationships with some of the most knowledgeable and productive coffee farmers across seven Latin American countries.

At the heart of Caravela's guiding philosophy is its commitment to sustainability with quality. Roasters receive not only a superior product, backed up by rigorous quality control and close auditing of sustainable production standards at source, but also an ethically sound one.

This is aided by a highly skilled team of over 40 agronomists who continuously work to educate producers and their families on the best practices to increase productivity and improve quality while adhering to a holistic, sustainability-based framework. With a substantial investment into its own IT system, Caravela can claim 100% traceability and transparency on the coffee they handle, down to every single kilogramme, no matter how large the lot. By working with the like-minded, the lives of the 3,000 or so producer families in Caravela’s direct web of influence have also been radically transformed, with improved yields and living standards directly attributable to fairer prices and the adoption of better practices via intensive awareness and education programmes.
