Rum and Raisin, Honeydew, Dark Cherry Compote

Type: Single Origin

Pak Muhlisin’s delectable coffee is grown at elevations of around 1,200 to 1,600 metres on the footsteps of Mount Argopuro, in Situbondo Regency, East Java Province of Java Island. As fresh water is scarce in the area, he primarily focuses on natural-processed coffee as a more sustainable choice.

This means that beans are dried fully with the cherry still intact. They do not undergo de-pulping and are directly dried under the sun on raised beds. Strong and sweet red fruit notes dominate the front of the cup. On the nose, dark cherry is prominent, accentuated with hints of sweet honeydew. Expect pronounced notes of honeydew, plum and dried strawberry at the taste too, rounded out by a honey-like sweetness and an unmistakable creamy chocolate sheen, with a subtle hint of earthy spices, and a finish that hints at dark cherry compote.

We recommend grinding the beans before brewing as freshly ground coffee tends to have a better flavour and aroma. However, you can still opt to have your beans ground by us.

Belift Green Beans

This single origin comes from Tlogosari village on the foothills of Mt. Argopuro in East Java. Working with Belift Green Beans, a group of next-generation Indonesian coffee professionals committed to developing the quality and sustainability of their coffee, this strategic partnership also marks Bettr’s first foray into this sprawling archipelagic nation with a rich tradition in coffee cultivation.

IMPACT

Pak Muhlisin, the farmer lead for Argopuro, is a native of the village. He pursued an education in agricultural science and after a successful career, decided to bring his multi-faceted experience in the specialty coffee industry back to his hometown. A non-profit cooperative, Pokmas Walida, has been set up by the villagers for the community's well-being, funnelling proceeds from sales into projects like a school that caters to the needs of villagers.

In choosing farmers who are willing to embrace change and thereafter employing a consistent, structured way of working together, Belift believes in enacting change through investing in various process improvement techniques, on top of social programmes that deliver care and services to the communities it is embedded in. 20% of the profit from coffee beans sales at Argopuro go directly to the cooperative, which also runs a local K-12 school. Pak Muhlisin is a great believer in the transformative potential of education, and we can expect his labours here to really reverberate in the years to come.
