Kenawat is Adena Coffee’s first origin, a place where history, resilience, and coffee intersect. Once a stronghold during the regional conflict between the Free Aceh Movement and the Indonesian military, the village carried a heavy stigma for years. Although most villagers were not involved, Kenawat’s identity became tied to the movement because one of its leaders was born there.

When conflict intensified in the early 2000s, coffee farms were abandoned. Even after the peace agreement following the 2004 Aceh tsunami, the reputation of being a “rebel village” lingered. Buyers across Gayo hesitated to purchase from Kenawat, leaving farmers discouraged and without incentive to process their harvest with care.

Adena's journey here began with Fahman Yoga, a young local from the community. Together, they sought to rebuild Kenawat’s place in the coffee landscape, focusing on quality, transparency, and restoring dignity to its producers.

In Gayo, Aceh, ripe cherries are selectively handpicked and pulped, keeping the sticky mucilage intact on the parchment. Drying begins immediately without washing. During the first stage, the parchment is placed in thick layers to slow drying and promote even oxidation. As the mucilage dries and shifts in color from deep yellow to brown, the layers are gradually thinned to quicken the process.

Drying continues for 21–28 days until the coffee reaches 11–12% moisture. The beans are then hulled, hand sorted, gravity sorted, and cupped before packing, ensuring only the cleanest, most consistent lots leave Kenawat.

Kenawat today represents transformation: from a village marked by conflict to a producer community defined by skill, perseverance, and quality.

- FRESHNESS
All coffee is shipped between 1 to 14 days after roasting. While freshness is often ideal, coffee actually benefits from a resting period. For the best flavour, we recommend letting your beans rest for at least 14 days post-roast. This allows time for proper degassing, resulting in more even extraction, a smoother, more balanced cup, and the full expression of the coffee’s flavour potential.

- GRINDING
We always recommend grinding your beans fresh before brewing for the best flavour and aroma. But if you prefer, we’re happy to grind them for you — just select your grind size when you place your order.

With every coffee subscription, you'll receive 1 or 2 bags of freshly roasted coffee beans — available in 150g, 350g, or 1kg sizes — depending on your choice. You can opt for deliveries every 2 weeks or every 4 weeks.

This is a recurring order with no binding period — you're free to edit, pause, or cancel your subscription anytime based on your coffee consumption needs.

Stay stocked up and in control, always.
